Wonderful Wiki

Go to: http://flatplanet.wikispaces.com/About and check out the power of wikis and technology. Two classrooms, two countries, one wiki, one project. We're not just talking pen pals, we're talking Environment. Students are having high level discussions and collaborating across the country on environmental projects. Who wouldn't want their child to have this experience!

The wiki has been, from my perspective, the perfect tool for online collaboration and this international project. What I like most about wikis is their ease of use. I only learned of wikis last fall and have only started using them with classes since February. If you can use a word processor you can create a web/wiki page. I experimented with web pages a bit as a student in college about 10 years ago and I had to learn HTML code and it was very difficult. Now it is as simple as point and click. Wikis/Web 2.0 are the new printing press. Now everyone can publish with the click of a mouse. It was a great tool for our Flat Planet Project because the students, if they had not used a wiki before, learned very quickly how to use one. The great thing about them is the ability to incorporate the use of various other Web 2.0 tools within the wiki. One of my students interviewed someone and then used Evoca to upload the interview to the net and then he embedded it into his wiki page. We also liked the ability to monitor student collaboration through the discussion tab on the wiki page. Working with another class and having an international panel of judges were great motivating factors for my class. This was a great experience for both my students and myslef.
